A board game consists of small game pieces that move along a marked board according to specific rules. There are so many to choose from, you are sure to find one that is perfect for anyone, whether it is a child, a family member, or a lover!
From classic favorites to homemade games, you will be sure to inspire hours of quality time and guaranteed laughter and silliness!
Whether you are you making it for a friend, a family member, a couple, or a lover…. this is a really unique idea that can be as simple and silly… as competitive and interesting… or as naughty and crazy as you want to go!
Make it personalized by collecting special pictures, quotes, memories, pop culture, inside jokes, etc that are significant for your recipient….. and you will have hit of a gift!
Or if your recipient has a special hobby or obsession, it's the perfect opportunity to capitalize on all their insider knowledge! For instance, if they are a huge fan of a certain band.... you can turn your game into a trivial pursuit game based on random facts about the band, quotes from the band, lyrics, etc!
The best idea is to choose a solid base for your board. Try to stay away from anything too flimsy. Cardboard will work best or you can even use a board from another game and make your own board game on top of it!
If you use paper, you should definitely laminate the design so the surface will last longer and the game can be reused for years to come!
(You could also make it a physical game involving a game board you create with each new round. Try using the driveway as the "board" and if your markings are simple enough, you can use chalk to create it.)
The easiest way is to use a board from another game and either paint over it… or super glue your photos and personalized messages on top and seal it with a lamination.
You can also design your own board based on another game. Refer to monopoly and use colorful markers to create your own version from scratch on a piece of cardboard the same size.
I think the best idea is to use photos and superglue them onto small pieces of cardboard. Circular may be best if you are going to leave them flat. I would also have them laminated so they last longer or in case they get food or liquid on them.
Another fun idea is to draw cartoon versions of certain photos or mess with the image in a photo editor, turning the characters into bobble heads, zombies, or whatever your imagination can come up with!
If it is an adult game, it may be a fun idea to have personalized shot glasses made to use as your game pieces!
(If you end up using chalk on the driveway as your board, how about getting life-size cutouts of your recipient and the other players if you aren't standing in as the pieces yourselves.)
How will you move the game along? Dice are the easiest and most common, or you can easily make a spinner or steal one from another game.
If regular dice seem too boring, how about buying some giant dice to spice it up! Or make your own out of big square boxes and big black markers!
Or add humorous pictures to the dice and give them each a symbolic number of spaces to move, etc that will keep the game moving.
You can come up with your own rules or refer to one of your favorite games and simply retype up adjustments adding that personal touch incorporating all those jokes, quotes, and memories…and also where you want the game to go…
What is the end goal of the game?….. perhaps you have another surprise or gift waiting for your recipient if they win!
Or combine the rules of several games! Make your own board game by adding in Truth or Dare when certain dice numbers are rolled…. or turn it into a drinking game… or make a giant sized "Jail Cell" out of cardboard that someone has to sit in if they land on a certain space or roll a certain number!
The ideas are endless!
